the Best of the Web for Corporate Geeks - August 2010
This month we've got a really "long" episode with articles worth reading, from project management luminaries, CEOs, magazines and marketing luminaries. If you've got some time to kill, browse through all the recommendations. It will be time well spent as July has been a really good month in terms of great thinking shared around the web.
- Who Are the Top Thinkers in Project Management Today? - I'll start with a roundup of the top thinkers in project management who actually take the time to blog on a regular basis. If you are wondering who else to read except us :) take a look on the list. We've found there some people we also love reading, such as Pawel Brodzinski, Bas de Baar or Scott Berkun.
- Forget Brainstorming - Newsweek has a pretty good article about brainstorming and which techniques can actually work. Definitely useful if you want to change your team brainstorming approach.
- The Acceleration of Addictiveness - while this is not a project management article, the essay is definitely a great read. Paul Graham takes the time to share his thoughts on technological progress and how it is used to accelerate both 'positive' and negative addictions people have in the modern society.
- The Role of a Manager - Pawel raises some questions about what the role of a manager should be. We've covered this topic as well with our Why Project Managers Are More Likely to Become Linchpins but from a different perspective. We will continue the discussion with some new stuff pretty soon. So stay tuned, just like Pawel, we will be very interested in your feedback.
- How to Network - If you are like me, you don't like networking events too much. Interactions are shallow more often than not and you just feel dazed and confused by the whole thing and its utility. In this article, Spencer Fry, a CEO who does networking for a living, shares real-life tips which can help anyone get actual benefits from such events.
- 15 Ways To Have A Better Meeting - Famous marketer, Mitch Joel shares his experience on how to have better meetings with your team. Definitely useful to any project manager.
- In defense of PowerPoint - Scott Berkun published a very good article which defends Powerpoint from all who blame the tool for the bad presentations done in today's corporate world. Personally, I love the tool - especially Powerpoint 2010 - and I fully agree with Scott's arguments: 'Why do some cultures demand massive slide decks and poor communication skills? Why do they confuse charts, spreadsheets and animations with clear thinking? Environments like these ruin the power of any tool, and eventually any mind. Any leader who confuses volume with clarity, and density with wisdom, has set up the entire organization to fail, independent of what tools they do or do not use.'
Take the time to read it and share your opinion with Scott.
I hope you've enjoyed this month's recommendations. If you have any comments or other links worth visiting, do share them with us via the comments form below.
